Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
Psalm 146 v 3
We should not place our trust in people in positions of power or influence nor should we trust in the children of men. They cannot help us in the day of affliction. Instead, we should trust the Son of God, Jesus who alone can help us. He alone is worthy of our belief for in His life, death and resurrection He fulfilled in full the requirements of the law, the requirements of grace, the requirements of holiness, love and mercy. This uni-verse warns us of the vanity of trusting human beings who like us are finite, fallible and mortal. The word “belief” also includes in it the word “ belie” indicating that if we place our faith, trust and belief in what or who is untrue, we will be betrayed or our hope will be belied.
Even the best or most talented or wise or most influential and powerful could fail us in the hour of our need. Instead, our dependence should be on the Lord Himself. He is absolutely reliable, capable and trustworthy. We cannot rely on armies for our defence or the wealth of the rich or the wisdom and educational qualifications of people. Our own kith and kin can fail us in our expectations but the Lord alone is faithful and worthy of our trust and belief. Neither should we advice anyone else to fully trust or believe us for we know that we are mere flesh and blood.
Our belief enables us to be more, do more and have more. Belief is the highest of human faculties, higher than reason and imagination, higher than every talent, higher than every ability and competence. The person whom we believe in should be worthy of our belief, faith, trust and confidence. Only one such person exists and that is the Lord. He deserves a monopoly of our belief. Nothing in life and no one else can compete with our trust and confidence in the Lord. Our hope is derived from our belief in Jesus. Our happiness is derived from that hope. Our help is from the Lord.
